This is a Youth Theatre unlike most others! Instead of producing existing scripts or well-known musicals, members of our Youth Theatre create their own original plays about Somerset.

Over the course of a term, Youth Theatre members will meet a whole host of special guests who help shape stories, ideas and characters. The final plays are performed at The Brewhouse, or in different places around Taunton and even further afield.

Based in Somerset, the Wassail Theatre Company runs these sessions. They create work for audiences across the whole county and are an associate company at The Brewhouse. You might have seen Wassail at The Brewhouse with The Giants (2o15) or Reclaimed (2018), and in Taunton with Rex the King (2017 & 2018) or Horses! Horses! (2018).

Like Wassail’s professional shows, The Brewhouse Youth Theatre make plays that put the audience in the middle of the experience. Our goal is to make plays that are authentic and entertaining; and we take inspiration from the amazing stories that come from Somerset.

At the moment we’re researching ideas for a new play inspired by Somerset’s past and present, which will be performed as part of the Somerset Youth Theatre Festival in April 2019. We’re looking at what was important for people 100 years ago, compared to today. The final Festival will feature performances from The Brewhouse Youth Theatre, and The Somerset Youth Theatre: Yeovil.

New members are always welcome, and no experience is necessary – although a willingness to play is essential

This project has been funded by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund. The group is currently run by Selina and Nick.

Several members of the Youth Theatre Group successfully auditioned for parts in our 2018 Christmas production (The Wizard of Oz), a fantastic follow on experience which you could enjoy too!
