From a rich and intriguing repertoire of ideas and imagery that has evolved over a productive lifetime of painting, Davies, through extensive questioning reassessment, explores in this honed down collection of paintings a contrasting choice of the figurative to the near-abstract.
A satisfying and unsettling coexistence of subject matter where the differences are celebrated in a deceptively simple manner offers potential for layered interpretations. The individual and sophisticated muted palette give an assured visual continuity to this first solo show in ten years. There is an optimism in Davies’ work , the sheer output, and determination and a faith in painting gives this exhibition a commanding authority.
A show not to be missed.
