Coinciding with the 75th anniversary of D-day we take another look at Steven Spielberg’s classic WWII drama.

With a stellar cast, groundbreaking special effects and immersive sound, this film raised the bar for the genre and provided an insight into the theatre of war unlike any other.

Upon learning that three Ryan brothers from the same family have all been killed in a single week, Army Chief of Staff Gen. George C. Marshall (Harve Presnell) requests that the surviving brother, Pvt. James Ryan (Matt Damon), be located and brought back to the United States.

Capt. John Miller (Tom Hanks) is tasked with this personal escort mission to locate and extract Ryan and is joined by some familiar faces along the way. But it is not long before the group’s morale is low and the troops begin to question the logic of losing more lives to save a single soldier.

The film won five oscars at the 1999 Academy Awards.

The Omaha Beach scene cost $11 million to shoot, and involved up to 1,000 extras.

In 2006, Tom Hanks was inducted into the U.S. Army’s Ranger Hall of Fame as an honorary member, largely thanks to his portrayal of Captain John Miller.

Saving Private Ryan was voted #1 greatest war film in UK’s Channel 4 poll in 2005.
