In 16th century Scotland Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan) has returned from France, creating tension between her cousin Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie).

Despite the female monarchy, Mary and Elizabeth are overshadowed by a male institution and the pressure of societal expectations. In a period of religious unease, Mary marries to stabilise her position, but when she is betrothed to Lord Darnley (Jack Lowden) it only agitates the already palpable tension between them.

Both Mary and Elizabeth lock heads in a political battle, while striving to make their mark on a male-dominated world.

Mary Queen of Scots showcases the skills of Golden Globe winner, Alexandra Byrne (costume designer), and 2018 Oscar award nominee, Saoirse Ronan (Mary Stuart).
