Final Portrait, written and directed by Stanley Tucci, follows the artist Giacometti (Geoffery Rush) as he endeavors to paint a portrait of young American art critic James Lord (Armie Hammer) in 1964.
Based on a memoir by Lord, the film shows how the portrait sitting, promised by Giacometti to take a few hours at most, extending into days and weeks. Lord is forced to cancel and rearrange a series of flights back home as Giacometti repeatedly overpaints the nearly finished painting before declaring it mediocre. Giacometti is distracted by outbursts about money, ruminations on art and death, and the regular appearances of his muse and lover Caroline (Clémence Poésy) and his wife (Sylvie Testud).
However, despite the frustrations, the pair begin develop an unusual bond. This comedy-drama is a tender rumination on human relationships, their ups and downs paralleled with those of the artistic process.
