Based on the novel by Penelope Fitzgerald, The Bookshop is set in a small, culturally stale town in 1959 England.

It is the story of a woman, played by Emily Mortimer, who, despite local apathy, narrow-mindedness and outright opposition, decides to open a bookshop, thereby instigating a mild social revolution that divides the town and plunges the community into crisis.

Bill Nighy as Mr.Brundish is an influential supporter of this cultural awakening as the film develops into a timeless comment on the value of literary culture as well as a poignant picture of a Britain still struggling to embrace cultural change.
