Rocketman (named after his 1972 hit) is a musical fantasy about Elton John’s breakthrough years, following his early days as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music up to his eventual musical partnership with Bernie Taupin.

Directed by Dexter Fletcher and written by Lee Hall, it stars Taron Egerton as John, with Jamie Bell (as Bernie Taupin), Richard Madden (as his manager John Reid) and Bryce Dallas Howard. Rocketman is not a typical biopic as it portrays Elton’s rise to fame according to what his own fictional self remembers while sobering up in rehab. Feathers and tarred reputations collide as the film follows his creation from the child prodigy Reginald Dwight to one of the greatest pop stars still living. Elton, who co-produced the film with his husband David Furnish, explained: “I lived in my own head a lot as a kid. And when my career took off, it took off in such a way that it almost didn’t seem real to me…..It’s obviously not all true, but it’s the truth.”

This is Taron Egerton’s third movie featuring Elton John as a character or contributor – his first film was Sing (2016) where he sang “I’m Still Standing” (which is the final musical number in Rocketman); second time Elton John co-starred in Egerton’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017). Taron does all his own singing in the film, but for the release of the album, Elton John has written a duet especially for them.
