Live from the Royal Opera House, a rich examination of the perils of power. The story of ‘Boris Godunov’ (Bryn Terfel), who reigned as Russia’s Tsar between 1598 and 1605, during the so-called Time of Troubles before the Romanovs came to power.

After seizing the throne by murdering Dmitry, the nine-year-old heir, Godunov has mostly ruled well, but increasing famines are helping his enemies gain more support. The young monk Grigory, born the same day as the murdered Dmitry, pretends to be him risen from the grave to try and take the throne for himself.
