It’s the closest thing to witnessing a miracle – just some cameras, a crowd and a voice touched by God: Aretha Franklin as you’ve never seen her before, giving an electrifying performance in the brand new concert film AMAZING GRACE.
This 2018 documentary film, “realized” by Alan Elliott, captures the two days in 1972 when Aretha Franklin sang her gospel songs at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church, backed by the Southern California Community Choir. A film crew was there to catch the Queen of Soul and the black church music that helped form her and fired up her faith.
The live recording of this performance is still Aretha Franklin’s biggest bestseller.
Why was this film hidden for so long? Technical problems. Director Sydney Pollack (in his rookie days as a director!) failed to synchronize the image with the sound, so the film was useless. But four decades later with the technology available to us now, digital experts pulled everything together to create an unforgettable experience.
