Dickens staggers, clutches his chest and falls dead. Seconds later he leaps up describing his final moments and re-living his happiest years: the last twelve. Publicly reading and performing his stories, and finding secret love with a young actress, Pip's powerful portrayal sees Dickens depicted not as the grave, serious man of myth but a man full of energy, passion and fire, a great way to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Charles Dickens birthday.

"A masterful performance, the name of the show says it all, Pip Utton IS Charles Dickens"
EDINBURGHGUIDE.COM

If you like this you'll also like Simon Callow Reads Charles Dickens

Dickens never ceases to delight me. There’s something in him which chimes with me: the energy; the scope; the generosity; the endless inventiveness of it. There is in Dickens the spirit of the medieval carnival that just deeply turns me on.

“Maps define the future of how we see the world because they give us information that we then react to”
PROFESSOR JERRY BROTTON

Maps are as much to do with philosophy as geography. They are not two-dimensional pictures of the world but windows on to a subtle and complex world-view. Maps can be highly selective and show geographical, psychological, social and economic places. Places are not static.

In response to these concepts, and following a successful Textiles Forum South West (TFSW) conference held at Somerset College in 2011, this exhibition includes work inspired by such varying themes as personal journeys, the landscape and history, through to ambitious networking of the sounds of making. The artists utilise a whole range of experimental techniques to convey their ideas including delicate hand stitch, felt making, quilting, collage, knitting, sculpture as well as digital media.

This exhibition builds on the TFSW’s previous collaborations with Viewpoint, Plymouth College of Art & Design and Walford Mill in Dorset, to showcase the talents of the TFSW membership through more than thirty artists that are participating.

"…these narrators are artless. They don’t quite know what they are saying and are telling a story to the meaning of which they are not entirely privy."
ALAN BENNETT

The lives of three women are split open as through their monologue their joys and foibles as human beings are unwittingly revealed. This probing bittersweet comedy satirizes the frailties of the human psyche. It elaborates on the experiences of connection and isolation both to ourselves and to each other. The women tell their stories from the only place they can, the subjective self. We enjoy an intensely personal and private tour of their lives, sensitivity navigating the recognizable ridiculousness found in the mundane and the familiar.

"It’s hardly a revelation to say that Alan Bennett has proven himself a master of the modern dramatic monologue….One of the finest dramatic achievements of the past few decades."
SCOTSMAN

Its purpose is to showcase and give opportunities to artists who would otherwise be excluded from the cultural life of their community. Outside In aims to provide a platform for artists who find it difficult to access the art world either because of mental health issues, disabilities, health, social circumstances or because their work does not conform to what is normally considered as art. Come along for a chance to meet the Outside In team and some of the artists engaged with the project. We will tell you how you can get involved, how to create your online galleries and all about the exhibitions in 2012 – 2013.

For more information visit www.outsidein.org.uk.

James Taylor, one of the great British instrumentalists of his generation has taken his trademark howling Hammond sound to the masses for over 25 years. 2011 sees the band tip into its 26th year, still famed for its upbeat, energetic live shows with no signs of slowing down. The band’s relentlessly enter taining tunes take inspiration from the rare-groove style funk, and boogaloo funk of the 60s and 70s and, the band is, without a doubt, one of the most important jazz-pop crossover outfits in British live musical history today.

Classic Cut presents Configurations, a work celebrated and enthusiastically reviewed for its use of speed and stunning detail. In revisiting this 1989 collaboration with iconic composer Michael Nyman, Jeyasingh provides us with a unique glimpse into a pioneering work from the very beginning of her company’s life and an insight into an inspirational collaboration between choreographer and composer.

Alongside this Jeyasingh will present an atmospheric new work (as yet untitled) that will draw on the dramatic and colourful theatrical genre of classic Indian dance. It will feature newly commissioned music from young Indian composer and sound artist Niraj Chag whose credits include Rafta Rafta for the National Theatre and the BAFTA-nominated Simon Schama’s Power Of Art series for BBC2.

By Samuel Beckett

A reprisal of last years acclaimed production, Krapp’s Last Tape returns to The Brewhouse to celebrate our 35th Birthday.

By turns tragically funny and hilariously sad, one man reviews his sixty-nine years with the aid of tape recordings made every year on his bir thday. A brilliant theatrical illustration of the internal conversation we have with ourselves. Bananas and alcohol abound in this one man show about ambition, sacrifice and growing old.

Tom Owen, star of the longest running comedy series in the world Last Of The Summer Wine, returns to his theatrical roots for this challenging role.

Pluck, the classical string trio with a seriously silly side, presents a tribute to the musicians who played on until the end. Nobody knows what filled the days of those brave few before tragedy struck, so Pluck have made it up.

Sensitive lead violinist Wally and brutally sincere multi-instrumentalist W’Theodore are joined aboard the fated vessel by stowaway Roger, a strangely small yet enthusiastic young man. As they entertain the guests on board, tensions build as Wally and W’Theodore begin to suspect that Roger is not quite the man he claims to be.

Featuring a real iceberg, one massive porthole and the biggest peanut you may ever see – and no Celine Dion.

Transition noun “The process of changing from one condition or form to another’ Oxford Dictionary” For his latest project Transition, photographer Paul Vickery explores the complexities of teenage identity. While observing a group of street dancers and free runners whilst visiting Taunton, he felt compelled to record the moment; “It’s not often in rural England I witness the
kind of drive and ability more usually seen in large urban centres. I was fascinated by the dedication and enthusiasm. The younger members of the group exuded a self-belief only certain teenagers seemed to possess, appearing untethered by anxieties and doubts often associated with teenage years.” Over a twenty-month period he documented the more subtle in-between moments that caught his attention. In keeping with his previous work, the exhibition remains grounded in documentary tradition. All the shots are produced using available lighting, in one frame of traditional film and then hand-printed. What you see is what you get with no digital manipulation. Paul Vickery has exhibited internationally and lives in London.

Recreating the unique spirit of 1940’s radio plays and brilliantly evoking a dinner-jacketed age of casual imperialism and stiff upper lips. The Fitzrovia Radio Hour’s brand new show tours fresh from three critically acclaimed London residencies, and two sell-out years at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Performed with cut-glass theatricality blending homage and satire, Fitzrovia mixes the chauvinist attitudes of 1940’s Britain with sharp contemporary humour to produce a heady comic cocktail. Sound effects are created live: a desk fan becomes an aeroplane, and multiple types of cabbage help to stage a fight scene. Rippingly good fun.

By Natalie McGrath

Once in a generation comes something so special that it lights up the future. To celebrate the arrival of the Olympic Torch in Taunton, The Brewhouse presents the international premiere of a powerful new drama by the most exciting playwright to emerge from the South West.

As I run
there is poetry in my body
in my arms there are doves
in my legs there is a river
and in my heart
a mountain that grows

As an athlete trains and dreams of Olympic success in Kenya’s Rift Valley, a woman on Exmoor puts on a pair of trainers that do not belong to her. Between both lie volcanic fault-lines connecting them across continents.

“McGrath is a playwright of promise”
THE TIMES

“Natalie McGrath is a distinctive voice”
THE GUARDIAN

"Sport has the powerto change the world. It has the power to unite in a way that little else does."
NELSON MANDELA
