Light Waves and Celebrating Somerset in partnership with The Brewhouse, present a day of FREE celebratory events in honour of the Olympic Torch visit:

Light Waves films
Over the past year Light Waves has been working with artists, schools, families and communities from across Somerset. Come to the launch of specially commissioned documentary films, created by Somerset Film, at noon. At 1pm join us for the premiere of the Luminos film, Taunton Stop Line, co-produced with Somerset Arts Works. Films continue on the hour every hour.

A procession led by specially created human powered vehicles with the Celebrating Somerset Banners and The Big Noise street band will leave the Coal Orchard car park and parade up to the north street roundabout and back. They will be joined by school children wearing Games-inspired costumes; with machines and costumes created by Somerset College students.

Outdoor Celebrations
An afternoon of participatory, sports-meets-arts activities and performances for all ages and abilities to enjoy together. As Taunton awaits the arrival of The Olympic Torch, join in the fun and games right outside The Brewhouse on this special day. Join the circus with Fuse Performance, with their exciting performances, workshops and street games, and also look out for some special performances from the local community. Come on down and soak in the atmosphere, quench your thirst and grab a bite to eat, as Edwardos serve up a summery outdoor barbecue and bar, catering for Taunton's olympian appetites. On your marks, get set, GO!

From 2pm to 3.30pm, parents with young children will be able to attend a free taster Lightstream workshop. This is aimed at ages 2 to 5 years old and is an interactive session, where children are invited to play with big lights and tiny lights, lights that glow and lights that move. Even some noisy lights!

Somerset Square
Illuminations
From 8pm, Celebrating Somerset will present an evening of sound, stories and light illuminating Somerset Square. The evening will feature live music, projections created by Light Waves artists, fire juggling from Fuse Performance Co and Street Linx, machines built by Somerset College students and the Wind Gatherer vehicle and its crew.

Geoff Capes is still the most capped British male athlete of all time, even though he retired from UK athletics in 1980, with 67 international caps and 35 tournament titles.

Amazingly, he held the British and Commonwealth shot-putt record of 71 feet 3 1/2 inches for 23 years. During his athletic career he won 17 national titles, was twice Commonwealth Champion, won two gold, two silver and one bronze medal at European Championships, was three times European Champion, competed in three Olympic Games and was awarded The Queen’s Jubilee medal in 1977, for services to the community.

With a combined experience of over 100 years in the music scene, The New Honeycombs perform the songs they love.

The current line up is:

Angela
Angela has been singing professionally since she left school and spent many years working on the cruise ships and cabaret around Europe until joining The New Honeycombs. Immediately before this she had been the lead singer with the 70s chart group Butterscotch for eight years.

Paul
Paul is the band leader and during his career has been the drummer and lead singer with 60s /70s chart group Katch 22. He has also worked with Wayne Fontana, The Easybeats and many other well known names from the 60s & 70s  and was even Smokie’s booking agent for a while.

John
John has been on the music scene for more years than he will admit. He was the lead guitarist with 60’s group The Raiders, has worked with 60s hit maker Twinkle and more recently as guitarist and vocalist with 60s Liverpool band The Fourmost.

Jeff
Jeff became a musician when he left school in 1963. He was very much part of the 60s music scene as  a member of  The Beat Syndicate who were the support band for many famous artists such as The Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, Lulu & The Luvvers,  Peter & Gordon and others.

Together they re-produce an authentic 60s sound with four part harmony vocals and promise you a trip down musical memory lane to include, of course, The Honeycombs hits.

The film expands on their 1969 track, The Pinball Wizard and their rock opera album Tommy. Directed by Ken Russell, it features a star studded cast, including the band members themselves.

Nora Walker is told that her British fighter pilot husband is missing in action and presumed killed in World War II. On V.E. Day, Nora gives birth to their son, who she names Tommy. While Tommy is an adolescent, Nora marries Frank, a shifty camp counselor. Shortly thereafter, Tommy suffers an emotionally traumatic experience associated with his father and step-father, which, based on things told to him at that time, results in him becoming deaf, dumb and blind, a situation which several people exploit for their own pleasure. As Nora tries several things to bring Tommy out of his psychosomatic disabilities, Tommy, now a young man, happens upon pinball as a stimulus. Playing by intuition, Tommy becomes a pinball master, which in turn makes him, and by association Nora and Frank, rich and famous. Nora literally shatters Tommy to his awakening, which ultimately leads to both the family's rise and downfall as people initially try to emulate Tommy's path then rebel against it.

It is performed (and adapted) by Rebecca Vaughan, who following the Edinburgh 2009 and Adelaide 2010 success of Austen’s Women continues her collaboration with director Guy Masterson (Olivier Award-winning Morecambe, Scaramouche Jones). Authentic costumes are provided by Kate Flanaghan (Austen’s Women, Bollywood Steps), and atmospheric sound design comes from composer/actor Waen Shepherd (The Inbetweeners, The Wall).

On 8 June Written On The Wind explores the winds and sounds of Somerset. During the spring a small ensemble of sound collectors will Sound Out Somerset, seeking out sounds, songs and stories, searching for the sound of the wind. Tonight they create a new show out of their findings. With Michael Loader, Francesca Dunford, Tim Hill and Tarn Aitken.

On 27 June Lost In A Sea Of Sound is a real surround sound experience, in which the audience is at the centre of a specially chosen ensemble of Somerset Sound explorers. A space where you can lie back and dream of new sonic worlds, oceans of sound and ambient sound worlds. Performers will include Michael Fairfax on sound sculptures, Jules Bushell, bass, stroh violin and homemade instruments, junk-shop shaman Stephen Ives on electronics and Tim Hill, saxes, toys and electonica plus special guests.

My One Temptation was the lead single. This led to collaboration with American soul singer Will Downing on a cover version of the classic Where Is the Love.

The follow-up album, Contribution was released in 1991. This extended Paris' soul and gospel influences to bring in hip-hop and house music and featured the track If I Love U 2 Nite written especially for Paris by Prince.

Further albums followed including Whisper A Prayer and Black Angel which contained a cover version of U2's One, and a duet with James Ingram.  Black Angel produced two more Top 20 singles in Stay and Carefree.  

Mica has also enjoyed a successful career as a television and radio presenter.

Her first love however has always been her music and performing live.

Described by the Daily Mail as “the most sophisticated drugs baron of all time”, Howard Marks has worked with the British Secret Service and has been connected with the Mafia, the IRA, MI6 and the CIA. Busted in 1988 by the American Drug Enforcement Agency and sentenced to 25 years at America’s toughest federal penitentiary; Terre Haute, Indiana. He was released on parole in 1995 after serving seven years. In 1996 he released his autobiography, Mr. Nice, which remains an international best seller in several languages and was the best-selling non-fiction book of 1997. On his revived tour, Howard speaks eloquently about his experiences as an international drug smuggler and on his opinions of drug use and legislation.

During 1997, he performed his first live shows, which discussed his life as a marijuana smuggler and his views on drug use and legalisation. Follow the ups and downs of idealistic students Rodolfo and Marcello and their girlfriends Mimi and Musetta, as they bicker, party, try to make ends meet and     follow their dreams. The comedy of the first half of this hugely popular production heightens its tragic ending, with audiences saying this 21st century Bohème affected them like no other.

OperaUpClose was founded in October 2009 by Adam Spreadbury-Maher, Ben Cooper and Robin Norton-Hale for the experiment of producing La Bohème at the Cock Tavern Theatre in Kilburn, a 35 seat theatre above a very rough pub. The company had no idea if anyone would come to see the show, or even whether opera singers would be prepared to work in such a gritty, fringe environment.

With equal amounts of delight and trepidation, they fielded requests for press night tickets from an astonishing number of national papers, and watched as tickets for the first fortnight sold out before they had started previews.

Since then, their La Bohème has run for nearly six months at the Cock Tavern (becoming the longest continuously running opera in the UK in the process), had two critically-acclaimed and sold-out runs at Soho Theatre, and won the 2011 Olivier Award for Best Opera Production.

These Wales-based artists, a mix of established and emerging talent, have in common ‘Rhôd’, an annual exhibition in rural west Wales that aims to site contemporary art in a rural landscape creating a dialogue between urban artists and artists who work in rural settings.

Following Reveal Somerset’s presentation at the Rhôd symposium, held at Chapter, Cardiff in July 2011 in which rural/ urban similarities were discussed, this exhibition seeks to further extend that dialogue into a conversation with The Brewhouse Gallery and it’s visitors. 

The artists have been chosen for their diverse mixture of media, which ranges from performance (Good Cop/Bad Cop), film (Anthony Shapland), sculptural objects (Sam Aldridge, Kathryn Campbell Dodd) and interventions (Jason Pinder, David Shepherd).

From their beginning in Manchester on 1 April 1964, the band has chalked up over 23 top twenty single records, 10 hit albums, 3 major movies and countless television shows and concert tours all over the world, up to date they have total record sales of over 75 million.

Since 1971 and the departure of Peter Noone to pursue a solo career, the group has never stopped. Original member, Barry (The Bean) Whitwam, has guided the group from strength to strength into one of the hardest working bands in the business. They still average more than 200 shows per year and reckon they maintain their stamina by having an amazing sense of humour.

This year our Young Company take on an exciting project of epic proportions. Adapted directly from Phillip Pullman’s spell binding trilogy, His Dark Materials presents a world where young girl Lyra lives in an Oxford very similar to our own. We soon learn however that everything is not as it seems as people’s souls are brought to life as animal companions, known as daemons and rumours of the magical powers of ‘dust’ are heard. Lyra embarks on an incredible journey to the Arctic having overhead her Uncle, Lord Asriel, arguing with the religious authorities about mysterious “dust”.

Before she leaves she’s given a strange device called an Alethiometer which the college deane informs her can tell the truth and uncover lies. Along the way she encounters fantastical creatures in parallel worlds featuring armoured bears, flying witches and child-catching Gobblers.
