THE OBSERVER
Candoco Dance Company celebrates 20 years of bold unexpected dance works that bring disabled and non-disabled dancers together by presenting three distinct works.
With their piece Set And Reset/Reset, Candoco brings back to life one of dance’s most iconic pieces, originally choreographed by Trisha Brown in 1983. Using the original concepts from Trisha’s playful piece, Laurie Anderson’s contagious score and Robert Rauschenberg’s beautiful designs, they have reconstructed a new version of this audience favourite.
French artist Rachid Ouramdane intertwines strong visuals and striking costumes with unforgettable music to create Looking Back. Drawing on the performers’ pasts, he reveals portraits of life to create poetic, often dark and ultimately compassionate dance work.
Also performed is Matthias Sperling’s lighthearted solo This Is It. Capturing the uniqueness of one dancer, the piece looks at issues of what makes an individual, and where the boundaries of that indervidual lies. This intimate encounter allows the audience to reflect and focus on every movement detail and to indulge in the feeling it evokes.
These works herald Candoco's next 20 years by celebrating dance through time, presenting different ways of making dance and building on their rich experience as the company of disabled and non disabled dancers. The restaging project Set And Reset/Reset has been co-commissioned by Dance Umbrella, London.
“The result is fluid dance, elegant, exciting and very playful.”
