Following their 2011 production of Oh! What A Lovely War, Blackeyed theatre retur ns with a seminal piece of 20th century drama. Combining their trademark ensemble-style physical theatre with Berkoff's crackling script, The Trial is an exhilarating evening’s entertainment. Joseph K, an estranged and rootless citizen, is the victim of anonymous governing forces beyond his control. Deceived by authoritarian power, he is relentlessly hunted down for a crime that remains nameless. Finding himself arrested and awaiting trial, K sinks deeper and deeper as he tries to escape through twists and turns that are at once shocking, thrilling and funny.
“choreographed with the precision of a metronome, Blackeyed Theatre’s production of Steven Berkoff’s play engages and fascinates. Ella Vale directs a close-knit ensemble with intelligence and clarity...In a masterclass of ensemble work, five actors create a multitude of credible sound effects, while beautifully executed mime signposts events as a bizarre and surreal story careers onwards. Working tightly together, actors rise to the challenge of this hugely physical piece with admirable energy, finding situations of high comedy juxtaposed against bleaker and blacker moments”
