Workshops in your School

Celebration of Light
Here in Somerset, once a year we all take to the streets, and watch as the huge illuminated carnival floats glide past us and heat us with the excessive amounts of light bulbs that light the Autumn skies.

Well have you ever thought about the other festivals that we celebrate all around the world at the very same time that are all based around celebrating light?  No, well how about Diwali and even the Bon Fire originated from Halloween.

This year The Brewhouse is celebrating light with a series of workshops that will take place in your school. The workshops will be for all key stages and will look at cultures, traditions and will produce a piece of work that will be exhibited at The Brewhouse over the October Half Term holidays.

There are four workshops available:

Monday 13th October, 9 - 11am (time will be made available for breaks)

Monday 13th October, 1 - 3pm (time will be made available for breaks)

Tuesday 14th October, 9 - 11am (time will be made available for breaks)

Tuesday 14th October, 1 - 3pm (time will be made available for breaks)

To book please contact Emily Bull, Learning & Participation Co-ordinator.

IN:SETFriday 7 November 2008

Increasing the level of Drama in your teaching and your School.  For Key Stages 2 - 4.

Increase your knowledge and develop your skills with advice and ideas from professionals.  Learn how drama can be applied to your class plans, release any inhibitions you may have about teaching it, and learn new teaching methods to inspire both you and your students.

Throughout this IN:SET teacher training day a number of leading professionals will guide you through easy and accessible ways to develop drama in your classroom and your school. Take part in a discussion about barriers there may be within the curriculum that prohibit drama and the arts being taught to a high standard and get advice about how those barriers can be broken down.  Participate in workshops that give you handy tips and knowledge about how to engage with unmotivated students and how to develop drama to link in across the curriculum.

Panelists on the day include, Alice Crane, Director or SPAEDA, Clare Lewis, Drama tutor and actress, and Susan Elkin, The Stage's education correspondent.

This is not to be missed!  Whether you want to learn something new or develop your skills, all teachers are welcome.  To book your place please contact Emily Bull, Learning & Participation Co-ordinator.

 Literacy and Drama Outreach Workshops

The Brewhouse's Outreach Workshops, aimed at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, are designed to expand literacy hour and creativity throughout schools.

Workshop for Key Stage 1 students

Telling Tales
This excellent workshop runs over a week long period of 13 hours. During this time students will take part in activities that advance their literacy, speech and drama abilities. It will also build confidence, imagination, English skills and creativity.

The workshop offers pupils the chance to create a story through drama music and movement.  Using drama exercises the group can build characters, setting and plot.  Time will be spent looking at sentence composition and students will be able to apply this to the short story they create.  After doing so, discussions can be made with further activities.

This workshop is brilliant for any primary schools that are finding it hard to co-ordinate literacy hour with other national curriculum requirements. The Telling Tales workshop will work creatively with young people and create an opportunity for further development.

The workshop will be run by a professional drama tutor and take place at your school.

The fee for this individual workshop is £500. Half of the fee will be required as a deposit when booking the workshop.

Workshops for Key stage 2 students

Acting the Part
This imaginative week long workshop will look at the creation, actions and movement contained in poetry. The workshop will be run for 12 hours over five days and will be taught by a professional drama tutor. During the workshop participants will look at poetry and have the chance to write their very own poems. The poems will be formed around a plot so that drama sketches can be devised, characters can be created and movement can develop.  This will climax at the end of the week with a performance.

A perfect way to illustrate page to stage!

Acting the Part is a fantastic support for school children. Linked to the national curriculum, this workshop will help children become more assertive and confident. It will look at English Language and Literature by reading and writing poetry, Physical Education through movement and dance, Geography by looking at where the poems could be set, History as for when the poem could be set, Art by creating props for the performance and mostly it will look at Drama through the production and performance itself.

Overall this workshop can be brilliantly tailored to meet all requirements.

The fee for this workshop is £500.  Half of the fee will be required as a deposit when booking the workshop.

"The workshop was good because it showed us how to show our feelings more with drama and it was really good fun acting" Year five student from North Town Primary School, Taunton, Somerset.

"The workshop was fab because it taught us how to go in front of everybody and perform" Year four student from Holy Trinity C of E VA Primary School, Taunton, Somerset.

"The workshop's covered a good variety of language used in literacy - for example, adjectives and alliteration. Children, sadly, have less opportunity to experience drama - so acting that directly feeds into and improves their creative writing is very important. With teachers full curriculum it is beneficial to have workshops that address aspects of the curriculum" Jane Hayes, teacher at Holy Trinity C of E VA Primary School.

The price of having both workshops in your school in the same week is £900.

For further information on these workshops or to book please contact Emily Bull, Learning & Participation Co-ordinator.
