Saturday 18 October 2008 - Saturday 29 November 2008
This solo exhibition by Devon based printmaker Simon Ripley is a collection of large scale monoprints - unique, abstract, brightly coloured works on paper. Ripley uses lino and wood to make each image and transfers it on to paper using an 1850s Columbian relief press - one of the first iron presses made in large numbers. Using gouges, Ripley cuts into the wood block, and in an entirely intuitive process, prints vibrant colours of wet ink on top of wet. This gives the finished print a distinctly marked and textured surface quality, placing Ripley’s work on the borderline between painting and print.
Ripley starts with simple sketched drawings which make reference to things that catch the eye: it might be an element of the landscape, a domestic object, an iconic form. The shapes, marks and forms in the work are like signs which trigger memories and connections. These signs are in conversation with each other. Like Japanese Haiku they are visual poems giving a wide breadth of possible interpretation.
