My CHINA NOW 33 Short Films
Sat 5th July 2008 - Sat 2nd August 2008
My CHINA NOW tells the story of China today through the short films of thirty three filmmakers, artists and creatives, all of whom are defining contemporary culture in modern China. Specifically commissioned as part of CHINA NOW, the largest festival of Chinese culture ever to take place in the UK, this project has been curated by Karen Smith, director of the Beijing based organisation Intelligent Alternative.
Films include China Bolero by artist Wang Peng and Ants, an animated story by Guo Yuanyuan. There is also a special edit of Zhang Yuan’s hysterical film about a new method for teaching English invented by Li Yang and Daydream by Wang Bo, China’s best-known Flash animation artist. Shanghai based documentary filmmaker Shu Haolun presents Yiwu a film exploring this small town in Zhejiang province that is claimed to be the Mecca of ‘Made in China’ goods.
Each film is between 3 and 9 minutes in length.

CHINA NOW
This bold new initiative between The Brewhouse and Hestercombe Gardens aims to bring international Chinese contemporary art to Taunton as well as developing work with the local Chinese population and other community groups. The series of events will begin with the launch of the new Chinese Seat at Hestercombe Gardens on Tuesday 1 July and end in September as the Olympic flame is handed to Britain from Beijing.
