China Now in Taunton

Saturday 1 August 2009 - Saturday 29 August 2009

This installation of large, silk banners is the result of a participatory project by artist Kate Paxman and members of the Somerset Chinese Association.

The exquisitely printed banners celebrate the cultural heritage of local Somerset families in an exploration of personal and collective stories, and fragments of these can be seen depicted in each banner. The lengths of silk suspended in the gallery space invite viewers to walk between and around them, allowing for close engagement with detail as well as a more distant, collective viewpoint.

This exhibition was originally shown at Hestercombe Gardens as part of the national ‘China Now’ celebrations and was chiefly funded by ‘Awards for All’.
