A Celebration Of Cecil Sharp
The Singing Landscape
A Celebration Of Cecil Sharp
Saturday 9 January 2010 - Saturday 20 February 2010
In the early 1900s Cecil Sharp and his helpers heard the music of more than 350 Somerset folk singers. Much of England’s traditional music owes its continuing existence to Sharp’s work in recording and publishing it. This exhibition aims to raise public awareness of this music through family histories. It brings alive the folk songs, the singers that sang them and the landscape through which Cecil Sharp and his song collectors moved.
Linked to ‘The Somerset Folk Map’, produced by Somerset County Council, this project has been funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Bournemouth University.
Do you have a singing ancestor? Come and see the show, hear the songs and read the map to find out.
